Adding & Editing Captions on YouTube
Captions make your videos accessible to a wider audience. Here’s how to add them to your YouTube content:
- Upload Your Video
- Ensure your video is high-quality (1080p), in 16:9 aspect ratio and no more than 10 minutes.
- In YouTube Studio, upload your video.
- During the upload process, select “No, it’s not made for kids” and set visibility to “Unlisted.”
- Work with Captions
- Auto-Generated Captions:
- YouTube will attempt to automatically generate captions. This may take a few minutes.
- In the video’s edit page, go to the “Subtitles” section to see the draft.
- Editing Existing Captions:
- Click the down arrow next to the language, then select “Duplicate and edit.”
- Review the auto-generated text and use “Assign timings” to match it to your video.
- Adjust timings as needed by dragging caption segments.
- “Save draft” to edit later or “Publish” to make them live.
- Creating Captions from Scratch:
- In the “Subtitles” section, click “Add” then “Type manually.”
- Type in your captions and set their timing using the timeline.

- Captions not only help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing, but they also improve engagement.
- Proofread your captions carefully before publishing!
